Today I got mail from Prüfungsamt Informatik (registrar’s office). The address was hand written and I was a bit shocked at first, because you do not get mail from the registrar’s office every day. Usually you missed some time limit or something like that. Luckily, it wasn’t anything like that, but an important document I had forgotten in the administration building a few days ago. One of the staff members of the registrar’s office found the document and was so kind to send it to me by mail. Very nice.

Do you have encryption enabled already?
Thursday, September 13th, 2007Muelli points out, why you should use encrypted connections for important information such as email. This shows once more, that we do the right thing at Proterzio. Most of our traffic (everything instead of http and ftp) is encrypted and we do not allow customers to use non-encrypted email connections for example. The price for this is, that our support costs are considerably high. Even though we provide a number of good tutorials for most email programmes out there, customers regularly need help with setting up their accounts. We need to work around stupid virus scanners, firewalls and bad user-interface design of option dialogues or account wizards. Additionally, most customers don’t understand, why their email does not “just work” or why encryption is a good thing. Unfortunately, most users would still not appreciate what we do for them, if I pointed them to Muellis blog post, I guess.

LEO now colocated by IPX
Friday, September 7th, 2007Link Everything Online, which provides one of the best free, online English German dictionary, is now colocated by IP Exchange. Until recently, they were hosted by Mesh Solutions, a Level3 reseller. Unlike this website, they are not (co)located in Nuremberg, but in the Munich datacenter of IPX. As IPX has it’s own personal in Munich now, that doesn’t matter much, however. LEO originally was a project of the Technical University of Munich and is now operated by a GmbH.

Monday, September 3rd, 2007Ubuntu Xorg maintainer demonstrates bulletproof X, which is an easy way to fix your X server configuration, if X failed to start with your current configuration. Configuring X was one of my first Linux annoyances after switching from Windows to Debian.
