Hot Media

Thursday, May 26th, 2005

While my boss P. arrived at the new Altona Mediamarkt just in time for the first opening at 6 a.m. today, I prefered to take a look during lunchtime – accompanied by U. – our new intern – and N. from the accounting department. U. and me didn’t want to buy anything in particular, so our exercise comprised mainly in trying to follow N. through the heavily crowded store – it was almost a wonder that she didn’t get lost. When N. finally found the USB stick (28 €), she promised to get for her neighbour, U. and I were really messed-up. That was due to the hot air inside the store. I suspect the air condition was not built for around 20 people per square meter and an outside temperature of approximately 30 degree Celsius at the same time. The advertised 1GB MP3-player (78 €) N. wanted to get for herself was undiscoverable. As we were already late and had not managed to eat anything we headed for the even more crowded cashiers. We chose the two cashiers we estimated to be the least crowded and split up. U. and myself took one line and N. another line. First we seemed to win – as U. said, but then N. made it to a cashier first. Presumably because we left our line to wait outside for N. and because I had my big Handelskontor Hamburg branded bag with me, we were “delayed” by numerous serious looking staff for an extended security check and a nice Would you please lift this book? interview experience.

Later we enjoyed a take away Italian ice selfmade and relatively cheap (0.70 €) at the restaurant just over the street from our office building.

And guys: It’s getting hotter again in Hamburg. It’s getting extremely hot now. We’re already pity for those people having their offices (aka saunas) on the 4th floor. I spent the most part of the day in a car with Ka., fetching a piano from our Barmbeck subsidary. Did I already say that it was extremely hot? Kodos to Ko. for writing his internal examinations now. And my best wishes accompany you of course. May the power of Thomas Mann be with you (If in doubt: This was an insider! *g*).

Well-Priced Purchase

Wednesday, May 18th, 2005

I should have known better. My mother asked me to go to the local Spar market and get her an “instant” soup and some bread. I paid 7,27 €. At Aldi I would have paid less than half that price – including transportation costs.

Data Center and GUADEC

Wednesday, May 11th, 2005

If nothing goes wrong I’ll be in the south of Germany from Saturday, 29 May 2005, to Tuesday, 31 May 2005. On Saturday I’ll be in Nuremberg, visiting the IP Exchange data center, where we host most of our servers. The rest of the time I’ll be in Stuttgart – most likely at GUADEC.

Weekend Roundup [Update]

Sunday, May 8th, 2005

Let’s see. This weekend I finally managed to

  • Get some freetime. Very important, thats while it’s the first point of this list.
  • Fix my bike. Let’s see how long that lasts.
  • Update Exim to the newest version. Rather straight-forward.
  • Almost updated Amavisd-New, although there are some strange bugs left, which I’m trying to sort out at the moment. Let’s see how far I get tonight.
  • Got most of the accounting done. All webhosting bills are sent out and all incoming bills are booked. Only those annoying “On-Site-Service” bills are left.
  • Sailed again, although it was a bit of a wet experience.
  • Mounted a new whiteboard from IKEA, which is magnetic – a feature I missed very much with my old whiteboard.

Things I didn’t manage so far:

  • Meet T. and K., although we almost made an appointment. Not so good.
  • Get the 3rd DNS server running.
  • Fix more than 46 bugs filed in our internal bug tracker.
  • Finish accounting. I’ll need another few days.
  • Put our cellar back in shape after some wet water detriments.

Update: Just finished Amavisd-New installation. Works now.
